A legend in his own right, the Gangsta Rabbi is a one man machine: playing flute, bass (backwards and upside down) and a myriad of percussion machines and pedals. He has recorded and self-released 16 records to date, and with JDub behind his 17th release, Lieberman's self-styled “pit-bash revolt” has finally come to fruition.breitling replica watches

By day, a town comptroller; by night, Steve Lieberman is the Gangsta Rabbi, a snarling, savage beast on stage and in his home-studio. His sound, having evolved crookedly and without much guidance since the 1970's, is fueled by his isolationist religious beliefs, modeled after the replica watches uk ancient Karaites, a long-dead cult that took the bible literally. He has opened for the madcap Andrew WK, and played flute onstage at Madison Square Garden with Weezer. Lieberman is the lone reincarnation of the Sex Pistols, a scratchy, singular Butthole Surfers; yes, he's the Jewish Wesley Willis—think Dead Kennedys with a long black coat and scruffy beard.

A Punk Life: The Gangsta Rabbi Story

A legend in his own right, the Gangsta Rabbi is a one man machine, playing flute, bass (backwards and upside down) and a myriad of percussion machines and pedals. By day, a town comptroller, by night– Steve Lieberman is the Gangsta Rabbi, a snarling, savage beast on stage and in his home-studio.

Recorded by JDub, the following videos are only the first two in a four-part documentary series meant to give fans an inside look into how the Gangsta Rabbi came to be, and how he has evolved both as a musician and a man living “against the grain.”

PART ONE: ORIGINS

The Gangsta Rabbi has opened for the madcap Andrew WK and Jackass’s Ryan Dunn– he’s even played flute onstage at Madison Square Garden with Weezer. We’ve seen him shine in front of a crowd of thousands, but we’ve never, ever, seen Jewish punk’s self-proclaimed “most original bassist” do this…

PART TWO: TWO FLUTES, ONE NOSE

Stick around for more badass finger stylings when part three hits next week! Check out more music on GangstaRabbi.com

Over The Sea of Reeds: A Passover Anthem

STEVE LIEBERMAN THE GANGSTA RABBI tells that punk Pharoah what’s up

in this rocking Passover anthem– Over the Sea of Reeds”

Zaide won’t need his hearing aids for this one!

If only every song in the Haggadah sounded like it exploded out of the ’70s British punk era…

“Over The Sea of Reeds”

Over The Sea of Reeds”

(Steve Lieberman)

We built for them the pyramids

We built for them the sphinx

They enslaved us, they oppressed us

These guys really stink.

Moses said to Pharoah

“Hey Let My People Go!”

‘Get back to work you Hebrew boys,

The answer is definitely NO!’

430 YEARS OF SLAVERY

BY REDEMPTION WE ARE FREED

GREAT CRY IN THE LAND OF EGYPT

AS WE WALK OVER THE SEA OF REEDS

He imposed on Egypt Ten Plagues;

He slew all their first-born

Israel had the first Passover

While the House of Egypt mourned.

Moses held up his staff

The Sea of Reeds split in two

An Exodus on dry land:

Freedom for the Jews.

But they sinned in the wilderness

In the desert they went astray

600,000 foot-soldiers

Died along the way

Moses saw the Promised Land

He died on Nebo Hill

3,000 years later

We fight for freedom still!

No Festival of Lights (On This Hanukkah)

“This is the true story of Hanukkah / No latkes, no dreidels, no la la la la la”

The Gangsta Rabbi was recently approached by a radio DJ and asked if he had, by chance, any holiday songs that could be featured on air. Not having recorded a holiday song since 1992’s classic “Punk Rock Hanukkah,” Steve Leiberman went back into the studio with a full band to record his newest soon-to-be-bigger-than “White Christmas” track, “No Festival of Lights (On This Hanukkah).”

The final result is one kick-ass production, with gang vocals that give force to lyrics expressive of the true story of Hanukkah– no chocolate candy, no commercialism– “But the miracle of re-dedication / G-d battling for his chosen nation.”

The Gangsta Rabbi Covers a Punk Classic

We’re working on a short documentary about the Gangsta Rabbi, but for now you’ll have to settle for this cover of the Buzzcocks’ “What Do I Get?”
